Lighting is a singular collaboration between photographer and subject that requires skills that go beyond technical knowledge and into a type of instinctive visualization developed through time and experience.
Skillfully crafted light, far more than simply illuminating a subject, is a key element in creating intensity, emotion, form, and depth in the photographic frame. This class, lead by professional photographer Adrien Duey, explores the higher ground of studio lighting and sculpting with light.
The focus will be the “quality of light” and the many tools and approaches available for creating with light. Various light modifiers (beauty dish, strip light, octabank, etc.) along with many tools borrowed from the classic beauty/film industry (flags, scrims, fingers, silks, gobos, cookies) will be taken out of the toolbox and played with. Students will work towards producing their final image: an exceptional portrait or still-life, with well-crafted lighting. A final in-class critique will be held to showcase student work.
