The Photographic Arts and Production Diploma Program offers hands-on training in analogue and digital photography, enriched by photographic theory and history. With small class sizes and the region’s best-equipped darkroom, students receive personalized learning while exploring both contemporary and historic techniques. All that is required is proof of a high school diploma or SPAO can administer a 12 minute wonderlic test ($30 CAD).

You will leave SPAO with the skills, experience, and portfolio needed to pursue your career as a photo-based artist, commercial photographer, and/or work within the arts and cultural sector. Unlike programs that focus on photography alone, you will acquire the skills and knowledge required to build a successful arts practice.

Our tuition fees average approximately $7500 CAD per year + kit fees and optional fees. As a Designated Learning Institution (DLI # 0264423058712), you can access student loans through your bank or use RRSP’s towards your studies with no penalty.

After you’ve completed the questionnaire, you will be contacted to schedule an interview with a senior team member. Take a walk through the SPAO Centre — a purpose-built facility designed to support every stage of your photographic practice.
Our studio is equipped with industry-standard lighting, camera and support equipment for shooting in a large studio, along with a selection of 35mm, medium, and large format cameras. The multi-station, multi-format darkroom supports in-depth study and hands-on instruction in historic and alternative processes. In the media lab, students edit, scan, and print using professional equipment.
