From photography’s very beginnings, the medium has been used to document scientific discoveries, historic events, and the ever-changing everyday life of the human. Even today, photographs — taken using digital and film cameras, even our phones — document every aspect of our lives, with an intimacy and an immediacy that has never before existed. Yet the idea of the photograph as a document is more complex than ever, with the role of the journalist ever-changing and the photographic artist venturing into self-documentation.
This ten-week masterclass is an intensive study of documentary photography projects and the photograph as documentary evidence. Classes will alternate between guest lecture sessions and off-site in-person photo excursions. Lecture sessions will take place online and include a 90-minute guest speaker, as well as planning and discussion of technical aspects of imagery. The alternating in-person session will involve technical discussions as well as documentary photographic experimentation. Students will complete this course ready to take their documentary practices to new heights.
