The traditional, hand-made black and white print is an important mode of photographic expression that has acquired a cachet in high-end advertising, fine art printmaking, and contemporary photo-based work.

Students will explore monochrome photographic processes in-depth, learning the controls and advanced techniques for the production of expressive black and white prints. They will be encouraged to conceive and execute a formal print project.

Exposure, film and format options, processing choices, enlarging, and print finishing (including toning, flattening and spotting) will all be covered using classroom sessions and hands-on work in the darkroom. Students will work with their own images to develop the full expressive potential of their photographic prints and to tackle a subject assignment with a holistic approach to their process.

  • Students must purchase their own film and photographic paper and have their own manual 35 mm or medium format film camera. Darkroom chemistry is included in the tuition. Participants must have a working knowledge of their equipment and some darkroom experience.

  • Darkroom I: Foundation or equivalent.
