DARKROOM II:

Advanced Techniques

Image by SPAO alum Treawna Harvey

The traditional, hand-made black and white print is an important mode of photographic expression that has acquired a cachet in high-end advertising, fine art printmaking, and contemporary photo-based work.

Building on the skills developed in Darkroom I, this class will explore monochrome photographic processes in-depth, learning the controls and advanced techniques for the production of expressive black-and-white prints.

Exposure, film and format options, processing choices, enlarging, and print finishing (including toning, flattening, and spotting) will all be covered using classroom sessions and hands-on work in the darkroom. Students will work with their own images to conceive and execute a high-quality formal print of their own.

  • Darkroom chemistry is included with the registration fee. Students must purchase their own film and photographic paper as well as have their own manual 35 mm or medium format film camera.

  • Darkroom I: Foundation or equivalent.
