Large format film photography has a very special place in the history of the medium of photographers. The view camera is a versatile and adaptable tool that has been celebrated by past masters such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Yousuf Karsh and contemporary trendsetters like Gregory Crewdson and Edward Burtynsky. Be it for landscape, still life, portraiture or architectural photography, the large format camera and its capabilities continue to hold great importance to the creative photographer.

Students will be introduced to 4x5 and 8x10 film cameras. Film handling, focus control, and creative advantages will be covered. An introduction to darkroom techniques with large format film will be covered. Weather permitting, this workshop will take place outdoors on SPAO grounds, close to urban environments including Dow’s Lake, etc, and the SPAO darkroom. If weather is inclement, COVID-19 safety protocols permitting, this workshop will take place in the SPAO studio and darkroom.
