About
Olivia Johnston is a queer and chronically ill lens-based artist living and working in Ottawa. She uses her practice to explore questions about the photographic image, art history, self-portraiture, the body, and illness. Her work engages with questions around representation, social issues, and the biases inherent in belief systems.
Saints and Madonnas explores the impact of Christian imagery on contemporary life. These works represent an attempt to reconcile the artist's agnostic understanding of the world with her culturally Catholic upbringing, and engage with questions about representation, gender, beauty, disability, race and ethnicity, and what it means to be human.

Olivia Johnston est une artiste photographique queer et atteinte d’une maladie chronique qui vit et travaille à Ottawa. Elle utilise sa pratique pour explorer des questions sur l’image photographique, l’histoire de l’art, l’autoportrait, le corps et la maladie. Son travail aborde les questions de représentation, de problèmes sociaux et de préjugés inhérents aux systèmes de croyances.
« Saints and Madonnas » explore l’impact de l’imagerie chrétienne sur la vie contemporaine. Ces œuvres représentent une tentative de réconciliation entre la compréhension agnostique du monde de l’artiste et son éducation culturellement catholique, et abordent des questions sur la représentation, le genre, la beauté, le handicap, la race et l’ethnicité, et sur ce que cela signifie d’être humain.

The SPAO PHOTO WALK is an ongoing and evolving outdoor installation featuring large-scale photographic artworks. Designed as a photographic treasure hunt of sorts, visitors and tourists alike are encouraged to explore and engage with our vibrant Little Italy neighbourhood.
HOW ARE ARTWORKS SELECTED?
The artworks selected for the SPAO PHOTO WALK launch installation were selected from a nationwide open call and by an assessor jury made up of nationally recognized industry leaders.
