About
Kali Spitzer is Kaska Dena from Daylu (Lower Post), BC on her father’s side and Jewish from Transylvania, Romania on her mother’s. Spitzer’s father is a survivor of the Canadian residential school genocide of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people. She is motivated by her heritage to uplift and preserve Indigenous culture and knowledge ways through artwork and documentation of her community, and traditional practices through photography. She studied photography at the Institute of American Indian Arts, Santa Fe Community College, and with the renowned Will Wilson to learn alternative photography practices. Spitzer is an Indigenous, Femme, Queer artist living on the Traditional Unceded Lands of Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh in Vancouver, BC.
An Exploration of Resilience and Resistance is about identity, culture, strength, vulnerability, and love. Witnessing different facets of people and how they explore themselves, Spitzer photographs her community of primarily BIPOC, queer, femme, trans and gender non-conforming kin to challenge pre-conceived notions of race, gender, and sexuality.

Kali Spitzer est Kaska Dena, originaire de Daylu (Lower Post), en Colombie-Britannique, du côté de son père, et juive de Transylvanie, en Roumanie, du côté de sa mère. Le père de Spitzer est un survivant du génocide des Premières Nations, des Inuits et des Métis perpétré dans les pensionnats autochtones canadiens. Son héritage la motive à promouvoir et préserver la culture et les savoirs autochtones par le biais d’œuvres d’art et de documents de sa communauté, et de préserver les pratiques traditionnelles par le biais de la photographie. Elle a étudié la photographie à l’Institute of American Indian Arts, au Santa Fe Community College et auprès du célèbre Will Wilson pour apprendre les pratiques photographiques alternatives. Spitzer est une artiste autochtone, fem et queer qui vit sur les terres traditionnelles non cédées des peuples Musqueam, Squamish et Tsleil-Waututh à Vancouver, en Colombie-Britannique.
« An Exploration of Resilience and Resistance » traite de l’identité, de la culture, de la force, de la vulnérabilité et de l’amour. Témoin des différentes facettes des individus et de la façon dont ils s’explorent eux-mêmes, Spitzer photographie sa communauté, composée principalement de PANDC ainsi que de personnes queer, féminines, trans et de genre non conforme, afin de remettre en question les notions préconçues de race, de genre et de sexualité.

The SPAO PHOTO WALK is an ongoing and evolving outdoor installation featuring large-scale photographic artworks. Designed as a photographic treasure hunt of sorts, visitors and tourists alike are encouraged to explore and engage with our vibrant Little Italy neighbourhood.
