Through her photography practice, Whitney Lewis-Smith explores the human relationship with nature in the context of contemporary globalization. Using 8 X 10 glass plate negatives, Lewis-Smith documents her highly detailed set of constructions exploring the nuanced ways plants, animals, and people interact.
This isn't a bonsai. The leaves are the spring clippings from a Mexican pine tree. The base is a stump from some other plant, long dead and without distinguishing foliage. The resulting tree and its constructed ecosystem walk a blurry line between wild nature and something curated by human hands.

À travers sa pratique de la photographie, Whitney Lewis-Smith, une artiste établie à Vancouver, explore les relations entre l’humain et la nature dans un contexte de mondialisation contemporaine. Lewis-Smith utilise des négatifs sur plaque de verre de 20,3 X 25,4 cm pour documenter ses créations hautement détaillées qui explorent les interactions nuancées entre les plantes, les animaux et les Hommes.
Ceci n’est pas un bonsaï. En effet, les feuilles proviennent des coupes faites au printemps sur un pin mexicain, alors que la base est une souche provenant d’une autre plante, morte depuis longtemps et sans feuillage distinctif. L’arbre qui en résulte et l’écosystème qu’il forme se situent à la frontière trouble entre la nature sauvage et ce qui est créé par la main de l’Homme.

The artworks selected for the SPAO PHOTO WALK launch installation were selected from a nationwide open call and by an assessor jury made up of nationally recognized industry leaders.
