About
Angeline Simon is a multidisciplinary artist based in Lethbridge, AB/Treaty 7 Territory. As a second-generation biracial Canadian, Simon explores familial narratives and the dynamics within contrasting cultures. The physical distance from family members and a lack of participation in cultural traditions motivated Simon to investigate her ancestral past.
“Penang II” is a digital collage print made from a scanned image of Simon’s maternal grandmother and great-uncle. Juxtaposed into the image is a photograph Simon took of an outdoor market stall while exploring her grandfather’s home town of Penang, Malaysia, in 2019.

Angeline Simon est une artiste multidisciplinaire basée à Lethbridge, en Alberta, sur le Territoire du Traité 7. Forte de son expérience en tant que Canadienne métisse de deuxième génération, elle explore les récits familiaux et les dynamiques au sein de cultures divergentes. La distance géographique qui la sépare des membres de sa famille, ainsi que celle installée entre elle et l’exercice de ses traditions culturelles l’ont incitée à se pencher sur son passé ancestral.
Penang II, impression numérique L’impression d’un collage numérique créé à partir d’une image, préalablement scannée par l’artiste, qui appartenait à sa grand-mère maternelle et à son grand-oncle, compose Penang II. Juxtaposée à l’image, se trouve la photographie d’un étal de marché en plein air que Simon a prise en 2019 alors qu’elle explorait Penang, la ville natale de son grand-père, en Malaisie.

The artworks selected for the SPAO PHOTO WALK launch installation were selected from a nationwide open call and by an assessor jury made up of nationally recognized industry leaders.
