Cherry Archer

About

Cherry Archer is a first-generation Trinidadian-Canadian multidisciplinary artist. Originally from Ontario, she is now based in Vancouver. Her art explores the humanity-nature relationship and is informed by ecopsychology, a field of study fostering ecological thinking and documenting how exposure to nature benefits mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

This piece is from a series titled Botanical Ice Tiles. Cherry’s process begins with plants she grows or forages. She composes and then freezes the vegetation in water to form a Botanical Ice Tile. The tile is illuminated with coloured light, photographed, and printed in large format. Each image is an interpretation of emotions and sensations experienced during her interactions with nature.

Using ice, a preservative, can be equated to an effort to hold on to nature as it is, and halt our global warming trajectory--- just as photography can be seen as an effort to hold onto the botanical ice tile, which, due to its ephemerality, is disappearing while being photographed.

This artwork location has been generously provided by Preston Event Centre and St. Anthony Italia Soccer Club.
