About
Sabrine Hakam is a Moroccan artist based in Toronto. Since arriving in Canada in 2019, she has blended her academic expertise with her artistic influences, culminating in 'Power in Portraits' - a creative project that explores matters of identity, representation and power through the medium of portraits. The focus of Hakam’s work is on BIPOC, 'third' culture, and postcolonial identities as a way to recapture narratives of representation and power.
Through the medium of textiles, this portrait challenges our linear understanding of modernization. On one end, the subject dons a traditional fabric known as ‘Johara,’ a North African handmade textile with a culturally specific design. The other end of the spectrum presents a subject in denim – a highly coveted article of mass production/consumption and an emblem of Americana. ‘The Birth of Modernisation’ subverts our singular understanding of modernization by demonstrating modernity and tradition as embodied within the same subject but disembodied in our understanding.

Sabrine Hakam est une artiste marocaine basée à Toronto. Depuis son arrivée au Canada en 2019, elle a combiné son expertise universitaire avec ses influences artistiques pour aboutir à « Power in Portraits », un projet de création qui explore par le biais de portraits des questions d’identité, de représentation et de pouvoir. Le travail de Hakam porte avant tout sur les PANDC, la « troisième » culture et les identités postcoloniales comme moyen de se réapproprier les récits portant sur la représentation et le pouvoir.
Par le biais des textiles, ce portrait remet en question notre compréhension linéaire de la modernisation. D’un côté, le sujet porte un tissu traditionnel connu sous le nom de « Johara », un textile nord-africain fait à la main avec un motif propre à cette culture. À l’autre extrémité du spectre, on trouve un sujet en denim, un article très convoité de la production et de la consommation de masse et un emblème de l’Amérique. « The Birth of Modernisation » subvertit notre compréhension singulière de la modernisation en montrant la modernité et la tradition telles qu’incarnées par le même sujet, mais désincarnées dans notre compréhension.
