About
Chantal Gervais’ photo-based and video works deal with the interconnections between memory and loss, presence and absence, and the body and technology. She finds inspiration in the corporeality of the body and things and places charged with memories and signs of past lives. Her distinct bodies of work expand upon the ongoing narrative that reflects on emotional and physical responses to our mortality and the human condition. Gervais lives and works in Ottawa.
Untitled (Self-Portrait with Tundra's Skeins no.2), is part of a multidisciplinary project where Gervais interweaves photo-based and video works with fibre art created from the fur of her late border collie, Tundra, who is dearly missed. The heart of this project is the process of working with his fur, as she turns it into chiengora. Gervais also began performance pieces that involve engaging with his skeins in front of the camera.

Chantal Gervais aborde les interconnexions entre la mémoire et la perte, la présence et l’absence, ainsi que le corps et la technologie à travers ses œuvres photographiques et vidéographiques. Elle puise son inspiration auprès de la corporalité du corps, et des objets et lieux empreints de souvenirs et de signes de vies passées. Ses corpus de travail distincts se veulent une narration continue qui réfléchit sur les réactions émotionnelles et physiques face à notre propre mort et à notre condition humaine. Gervais vit et travaille à Ottawa.
Self-Portrait with Tundra’s Skeins no.2, fait partie d’un projet multidisciplinaire où l’artiste entrelace la photographie, la vidéo et l’arts textiles créé à partir des poils de son défunt border collie, Tundra, qui lui manque beaucoup. Le cœur de ce projet est le processus de travail avec ses poils, dont elle file les fibres pour en faire de la laine. Gervais a également commencé à réaliser des œuvres performatives qui impliquent de s’engager avec cette laine filée en face de la caméra.

HOW ARE ARTWORKS SELECTED?
The artworks selected for the SPAO PHOTO WALK launch installation were selected from a nationwide open call and by an assessor jury made up of nationally recognized industry leaders.
