YEE CLUN LOST STORY
Xiao Han

About

Xiao Han is a Saskatoon-based artist and curator originally from Wuhan, China. Han's creative practice focuses on narrative photography, visualizing emotion, affect sense and community engagement. Han's research explores diaspora identity, contemporary gender issues, and decolonial practice. Han produced numerous projects investigating the Chinese one-child policy, Chinese Canadian immigrants' identity, and the aesthetic of community relationships through visual art and curatorial practice.

Yee Clun Lost Story speaks of the racial discrimination suffered by Chinese restaurant owners under Saskatchewan's "White Woman Labour Law" passed in 1912. It is a photo narrative of Yee Clun’s story through stage design, self-performance, and prop making. The newspaper that the actor is holding is a real reprinted newspaper from 1924 which reports about Yee Clun's story.
