About
Chun Hua Catherine Dong’s artistic practice is based in performance art, photography, video, VR, AR and 3D printing within the contemporary context of global feminism. Dong’s work deals with cultural intersections created by globalization and asks what it means to be a citizen of the world today. Working within the gap between body as image and body as experienced reality Dong uses the body—often their own body— as a visual territory in their work and a primary material to activate social commentary on gender, identity, and immigration. Dong currently focuses on art and technology.
I Have Been There is an on-going public intervention performance that explores belonging, diaspora, and existence in public spaces. Each time I travel to a new place, I make a new duvet with Chinese traditional embroidered silk fabric. Covered by the duvet, I lie on the ground of historical sites, landmarks, tourist attractions, and other significant places or events as a sign of negotiating and/or engaging with cultures and spaces.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong (elle/iel) est un·e artiste multimédia d’origine chinoise qui demeure à Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. Sa pratique artistique fait appel à la performance en art, à la photographie, à la vidéographie, à la réalité virtuelle, à la réalité augmentée et à l’impression 3D dans le contexte contemporain du féminisme mondial. Ses œuvres se concentrent principalement sur les intersections culturelles comme conséquences de la mondialisation, et s’interrogent sur la signification d’être citoyen.ne du monde d’aujourd’hui. Travaillant avec l’absence de corps, en tant qu’image, et avec le corps, en tant que réalité vécue, Dong utilise le corps — souvent le sien — dans son travail comme territoire visuel et comme principal outil pour générer un commentaire social sur le genre, l’identité et l’immigration. L’artiste a obtenu une maîtrise en intermédias de l’Université Concordia et un baccalauréat en arts visuels de l’Université d’art et de design Emily Carr au Canada.
I Have Been There est une performance publique toujours en cours qui explore l’appartenance, la diaspora et l’existence dans les espaces publics. Chaque fois que Dong se rend dans un nouvel endroit, iel confectionne une nouvelle couverture à l’aide d’un tissu de soie brodé traditionnel chinois. Recouvert·e du produit final, l’artiste s’allonge sur le sol de sites historiques, de points de repère, d’attractions touristiques et d’autres lieux ou d’événements importants en signe de négociation et/ou d’engagement avec les cultures et les espaces.

The SPAO PHOTO WALK is an ongoing and evolving outdoor installation featuring large-scale photographic artworks. Designed as a photographic treasure hunt of sorts, visitors and tourists alike are encouraged to explore and engage with our vibrant Little Italy neighbourhood.
HOW ARE ARTWORKS SELECTED?
The artworks selected for the SPAO PHOTO WALK launch installation were selected from a nationwide open call and by an assessor jury made up of nationally recognized industry leaders.
