THE LARGE FORMAT

Photo by SPAO alum Whitney Lewis-Smith

Large format film photography has a very special place in the history of the medium of photographers. The view camera is a versatile and adaptable tool that has been celebrated by past masters such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Yousuf Karsh and contemporary trendsetters like Gregory Crewdson and Edward Burtynsky.

Be it for landscape, still life, portraiture, or architectural photography, the large format camera and its capabilities continue to hold great importance to the creative photographer.

Students will be introduced to 4x5 and 8x10 film cameras. Topics covered include film handling, focus control, and the creative advantages of large format. An introduction to darkroom techniques with large format film will be covered as well.

  • Access to a view camera will be provided to those who need one. Students are encouraged to come with their own view camera and tripod.

  • Darkroom I: Foundation, or equivalent.
