STAY SILENT, DRIFT DEEP

STAY SILENT, DRIFT DEEP is a meditation on how one navigates through times of trauma. Each of the four artists sift the dark well of their internal structures, probing for a way to examine and resolve their individual dilemmas. Is there peace in solitude? Can my mental health be mapped? Where are the spaces for discovery? How deep does this grace go?

The exhibition asks viewers to untether their expectations and fall into the turbulence of contemporary lived experience.

THE ARTISTS

AVA
MARGUERITTE

Ava Margueritte is a neurodiverse multidisciplinary artist, primarily focused on photography. Margueritte has a BFA from OCAD University in Fine Arts Photography and a Diploma from School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa. Using various photographic mediums, she explores different narratives to document physical reactions to other emotional states. By absorbing her surroundings, she evaluates the connection between body and mind.

MARGO
MCDIARMID

Margo McDiarmid is a graduate of SPAO and a 2020/21 Artist-in-Residence. She is an international award-winning journalist and former broadcaster with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC). McDiarmid has lived and worked around the world and across the country, including eight years in the Northwest Territories. She is a photo-based artist with an interest in documenting how one interacts with cold, dark, remote, and empty places.

SHAELYNN TREDENICK

Shaelynn Tredenick is a photo-based artist in Ottawa, Canada. She is an emerging artist, having recently graduated from School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa and previously from the Photography program at Algonquin College in 2018. A competitive dancer for the past ten years, she now carries the same sense of style and movement into her visual practice. Her work has evolved to include different types of photographic media including scanography of still life and botanicals.

STEVEN
WEST

Steven West is a fine art photographer with a practice centred around innovative techniques of combining photographic art and science. Building on his personal experiences as an innovator and technologist, West is exploring the diversity of life and the impact of technology on our futures. His image- making seeks to use experimental techniques and novel imaging technologies to explore the narrative of objectivity derived from research in science and technology. His images are visualized when innovation in art and science come together.

SPAO RESIDENCY

This exhibition is the culmination of a 6-month artist residency at the SPAO Centre, which captured an incubation of intense periods of research, self-discovery, mentorship, and boundary expansion within their practices. Throughout the process, the artists navigated the challenges of personal struggles, pandemic restrictions, and the difficulty of staying true to their individual artistic visions. The resulting work presents a dialogue of self-reflection, of acceptance, and perhaps even, of release.
