ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES I:

The Large Format Camera + Paper Negative

Image by SPAO alum Whitney Lewis-Smith

Large format film photography has a very special place in the history of the medium of photography. The view camera is a versatile and adaptable tool that has been celebrated by past masters such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Yousuf Karsh and contemporary trendsetters like Gregory Crewdson and Edward Burtynsky.

Be it for landscape, still life, portraiture or architectural photography, the large format camera and its capabilities continue to hold great importance to the creative photographer.

Students will be introduced to 4x5 and 8x10 film cameras. Topics covered include film handling, focus control and the creative advantages of large format. An introduction to darkroom techniques with large format film will be covered, and students will learn how to make images on paper negatives to employ the techniques learned in the workshop.
