ALTERNATIVE PROCESSES I:

Cyanotype

Photo by SPAO alum Danielle Labonté

The cyanotype is one of the earliest and simplest photographic processes, instantly recognized for its majestic hue range of cyan and cobalt blue. This unique printmaking process is capable of creating distinctive and beautiful imagery and it’s application allows for unexpected contemporary uses.

In this workshop students will learn the basics of this magical, UV (sunlight) activated process, and explore how to print on a selection of substrates such as fabric. Students will print on provided paper and cotton cloth material, in order to experience the range of options that the cyanotype process provides. Students will also have the opportunity to produce a digital negative from an image of their choosing, allowing for an original photograph, found imagery or a treasured family photograph to be produced through this fascinating method. Students will walk away with printed work and the knowledge to continue to print in their own studios or backyard, utilizing the power of the sun itself.

Cyanotype chemistry, cotton material, and an assortment of papers are included in the cost of the workshop; however, students may want to bring their own paper, white t-shirts or fabric for experimentation.

  • Digital image you would like to have produced as film negative for cyanotype printing.

Optional: bringing a selection of paper, fabric or other absorbent materials to print on.

  • Recommended: Darkroom I or equivalent.
