Two fundamental truths concerning photography regarding both the analogue and digital process remain constant, the presence of the witness and mark making. This master class/ lecture series will explore the formal language of photography and its association with Art History and the History of Photography. Ten illustrated lectures accompanied with group discussion will explore photography’s historic traditions and their link with contemporary image making. Participants will be asked to consider the use of storytelling, sequencing, the constructed and directed image, the photograph as evidence and document, the photograph as metaphor, propaganda, and as a personal journal.

References gained and valued over the years by art history and the history of photography, might enlighten ones appreciation for historical continuity with the autobiographical metaphor. Any process of rendering, whether of the objective trace or a structured collective mark-making, should consider the private, social, and cultural experience.

Finally, all these elements will provide insight for the artist wishing a more comprehensive understanding of their work: insight which will assist in an understanding of ideas suggested by their work and how they might be developed. This series will also benefit collectors and members of an informed audience.
