TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHY I: FOUNDATION

“I am not an artist. An artist makes an object … I work in history. I am a storyteller.” Sebastiao Salgado

Who are you when you step out into the world with your camera? What is your intention for the photographs that you create? Who are they for? What’s the story you want to tell? What are your ethical boundaries? How far are you willing to open yourself up to strangers? Is there an approach to the taking and sharing of images that benefits and honours their subjects?

Travel has always inspired and challenged photographers in their practice. Photography can be a way of really paying attention that can deepen the experience of travel. It can also confront you with your fears and be a catalyst to extending the boundaries of your own humanity.

This course will put you in dialogue with the great thinkers and practitioners of travel photography – their guiding ideas, techniques, and images. You will be invited to share your insights, experiences and challenges with a view to clarifying and refining your own intentions, conscious and conscientious, mindful of the dignity and agency of strangers, of their history and culture, the potential impacts of your actions and choices, and the vulnerability and fragility of photogenic locations.

Although there will be reference to the technical and artistic aspects of photography, this course will concern itself primarily with what goes on in the mind and heart of the photographer at loose on the planet. We will look at how you find useful knowledge about places you are going, the bridges and barriers to connecting with people of diverse cultures and languages, and the building blocks of great visual stories. As a research and planning exercise, and an exercise of imagination, we will find our way to one of the most photogenic and remote locations in the world, develop a shot list of ideal captures, and determine how we will go about achieving them.

This course is the first of a program at SPAO that will be designed to support and inspire photographers who travel.

Requirements: This is a program for photographers at the intermediate or advanced level who have a high degree of comfort with manual shooting, post-production, and the use of a DSLR with interchangeable lenses.
