THE LARGE FORMAT

Large format film photography has a very special place in the history of the medium of photographers. The view camera is a versatile and adaptable tool that has been celebrated by past masters such as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, and Yousuf Karsh and contemporary trendsetters like Gregory Crewdson and Edward Burtynsky. Be it for landscape, still life, portraiture or architectural photography, the large format camera and its capabilities continue to hold great importance to the creative photographer.

Students will be introduced to 4x5 and 8x10 film cameras. Film handling, focus control, and creative advantages will be covered. An introduction to darkroom techniques with large format film will be covered.

REQUIREMENTS: Access to a view camera will be provided to those who need one. Students are encouraged to come with their own view camera and tripod.
