PORTRAITURE AS EXPERIENCE

In PORTRAITURE AS EXPERIENCE you will learn an approach to making portraits that will transform the experience of both the photographer and the subject.

This masterclass will teach you how to create portraits where the individuality of the subject, whether that be a stranger, a friend or a family member, takes precedence over merely creating a likeness of the subject. It will help you develop techniques that create a more intimate relationship between the photographer and the person they are photographing.

You will learn how to initially approach the people you are interested in photographing and, once contact is made, ways to work with them that will allow for a fuller experience. We will also consider how and when “style” is important and how to work toward creating a series of portraits that suits your aims and ambitions.

There will be instruction on how to look for and find locations, how to study and use available light and when and how to add light (portable flash or a room light) to achieve the effect you are after.

The technical aspects of portraiture will be treated only as a means to an end. This masterclass is mostly about how to explore the space between you and subject.

Each week there will be an assignment. As the course progresses each assignment will require the students to apply some of the technical lessons they have been taught along with a deepening commitment to using portraiture as a way of gaining experience with and about the world.

Requirements: Camera, Photoshop fundamentals, a sense of adventure. A speed light and stand will be helpful but not necessary.
