masterclass: portrait concepts
From the very beginnings of civilization, representations of the human presence have been a primary focus within visual media. Photographs today bring the portrait to us all, with an immediacy that has never before existed. Yet the photographic portrait is more complex than ever, with its meaning, use, and significance ever shifting.
This ten-week masterclass is an intensive study of the portrait photograph with guest lectures from the faculty members of SPAO’s full-time program, all of whom have used the photographic portrait to various ends in their practices. Classes will alternate between guest lecture sessions and studio hands-on experimentation. Lecture classes will include a 90 minute lecture from one of SPAO’s faculty members; the remainder of the class will involve planning and discussion of technical aspects of imagery. Studio work sessions will be a portrait shooting class and will find inspiration from the previous week’s lecture. Shooting classes will be led by faculty Lighting Instructor Adrien Duey, who has over thirty years of experience as a fine art and advertising photographer, and art director.
Over the course of this intensive class, students will engage critically with the photographic portrait, examine the work and methods of local practicing artists, explore a variety of studio lighting methods, styles, and techniques on live subjects. Students will complete this course ready to take their photographic portraiture practices to new heights.
