Portfolio Course Description
A practical and theoretical exploration of photographic lighting beginning with "writing" with available light sources. Light characteristics, light qualities and creating your own light aesthetic will be investigated thoroughly. Demonstrations, lectures and hands on exercises will allow the student a comprehensive knowledge base for the controlled use of light reflectors and modifiers. Students should achieve full control of their ambient light. Through genre-oriented assignments set design, styling and composition are also introduced.
The core timetable is lecture based with demonstrations and with short, genre-oriented production assignments that lead the students to apply what they learned into practice.
Students must undergo a portfolio review before acceptance into this course. There are no other prerequisites for this course. This is a basic level course and teaches material useful for other SPAO courses and workshops. Students must have their own medium format film camera and laptop computer with Photoshop CS 4 or later installed. The materials fee for this course provides or makes available for loan, during the duration of the course, key pieces of lighting and studio equipment used in instruction. The fee also covers studio-booking costs for participating students. Enrolment is limited to ensure one-on-one attention.
