Philip Ross: "There is no such place as too far"

Coming to SPAO as an artist who wanted to use the photographic medium, I could not have found a better fit. SPAO combines the teaching of technical excellence in photography with the idea that a well-wrought photograph can transcend its subject matter—and even its purpose–to become great art, as multilayered, resonant and timeless as any painting, sculpture, novel or movie.

My experience at SPAO was of being part of a community of staff and students all committed to helping you improve your photographic skills and supporting your search for a photographic language you could call your own.

For me, most of all, SPAO was an opportunity to push the limits of my absurdist/surreal artistic sensibility without fear of being criticized for going too far. At SPAO, at least artistically, there is no such place as too far. This unfettered approach of expression was a new experience that allowed me to create images without compromise and that I believed were completely true to myself. It was two years well spent and I’m a better person for it.
