Portfolio Course Description
This lecture course provides in-depth, relevant, instruction in the theoretical foundations of silver gelatin film photography; from the camera and its functioning, through lenses, exposure, optics, silver gelatin film and print development theory. Students will build an invaluable knowledge base including exposure control basics, aperture and shutter speed effects for the silver gelatin film capture medium and explore camera formats from medium to large. It is a comprehensive theoretical study of darkroom practice, film theory and print development theory for silver gelatin printmaking.

The core timetable is lecture based with short, genre-oriented production assignments that lead the students to apply the theory learned into practice.

Students must undergo a portfolio review before acceptance into this course. There are no other prerequisites for this course. This is a basic level course and teaches fundamentals necessary for other SPAO courses and workshops. Enrolment is limited to ensure one-on-one attention.
