MOMENTS IN TIME: A brief history of the photograph
Photography is about capturing a moment in time.
In this course we will explore the attempts over 4000 years of history to record moments in time using various media. The resulting images may be cherished for a lifetime and beyond or shared over the internet where they remain in cyberspace limbo.
From the 1820s to the present day, the photograph has become an essential part of the human experience: recording personal images, documenting major events, capturing celebrations, witnessing world conflicts and the ultimate personal photograph…. the selfie.
A series of key topics will chart the advancement of photography as a social reporting medium, portraiture, documentary, landscape and nature, contemporary and conceptual developments. The course content will include illustrative lectures and informative discussions, practical exercises, handout references for further study, and a visit to the National Gallery of Canada.
