DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY II: BEYOND THE BASICS
"It's not the medium, or the oil, or the price, or whether it hangs on a wall or you eat it. What matters, what makes it art, is that the person who made it overcame the resistance, ignored the voice of doubt, and made something worth making. Something risky. Something human." — Seth Godin
Why do you take pictures? What made you take that particular photo? What role does photography play in your life, and how does it, through you, impact and influence the lives of others? Where are you going with it? What stories do you want to tell? How do you do it better? What does better mean?
Beyond the Basics will provide a catalyst to deepening your practice by contemplating these questions while undertaking a series of challenging and enjoyable shooting assignments, with a variety of subjects and locations, designed to expand your understanding of exposure and composition, while improving your creative judgement and technical abilities through the process of capturing, critiquing, editing and presenting new photographic work.
The course will also include a comprehensive introduction to, and guided exercises in the principles, techniques, and workflow of image-editing, using Lightroom as the digital darkroom. Critical judgement will be built by assessing the raw images to determine whether decisions made at time of capture achieved the desired results, with a view to incorporating learnings and insights into subsequent assignments. Students will then learn how image-editing tools can be used to recover and enhance flawed images, compensate for shortcomings in the original composition, correct exposure and white balance, introduce contrast and sharpness, as well as experiment with a variety of visual ideas and creative approaches.
Course participants will be encouraged to treat every assignment as a project, with the ultimate intention of publicly presenting and sharing the work.
We will work together in Beyond the Basics to ensure that you:
- Achieve greater comfort and control in using your camera
- Clarify your own goals and objectives for your work
- Advance the process of discovering and refining your unique visual style
