DEEPER: A MASTER CLASS WITH
This masterclass will introduce you to a philosophy, strategies and approaches to photography that will add nuance, depth and complexity to the work you produce. Your camera will transform from a machine that merely records what you see into a tool of discovery. It doesn’t matter what your present subject matter is, this course will show you how to expand your photo practice.
The first class will present examples of portfolios that show how complexity can be woven into bodies of work, how disparate images can be combined to create new meanings and how these new meanings can illuminate your relationship to the world. As well, there will be practical advice on how to initiate and proceed with personal projects. I will look at your current work and suggest tactics and techniques to expand its scope.
After that this is a hands-on course. You will be required to devote at least 6 hours a week to working on a project.
In the following 2 classes we will be looking at and discussing the work you bring in. Your images will be assembled into little sequences, narrative arcs, that will bring forward facets of what you have been looking at, considering and photographing. Discussion, suggestions, tactics and practical advice will ensue. Through doing the work, exploring possibilities, embracing failure and being open to surprise, your understanding of what a camera can do will be greatly expanded.
The final class will be spent putting together final edits from your month of shooting. You will come away with a photo-narrative, a non-literal story that embraces complexity and creates new meanings through the relationship of the images. We will also discuss ideas about the distribution and dissemination of imagery and how your work can go out and find a place in the world.
REQUIREMENTS: Digital or film camera and the ability to devote at least 6 hours a week to shooting. Participants will be required to bring at least 30 4x6 work prints to each class. (Details about how and where to get the prints done will be covered in the first class. The approx. cost of photofinishing work prints is 16¢ to 33¢ each, depending upon where you get them done.)
