Today’s cameras are equipped with technology to help you take a technically perfect picture. But technical isn’t creative. Photography is a balance between technique and artistic vision. A camera is one tool used in the process of creating images; it’s how you use your camera’s functions (point-of-focus, shutter speed and aperture), and the subjects you choose that matter most.
Challenges will stimulate your creativity and hone your technical skills. Each class will feature an open discussion on the work of various photographers. We will then have an opportunity to work on a weekly photographic challenge, which can be completed in the classroom, or in the surrounding area of the school. The third and final part of each class will be presenting an 8x10 (or larger) print from the previous week’s challenge.
EQUIPMENT: This workshop is open to anyone with any type of camera: digital, film, point-and-shoot, smartphone, SLR, 4x5, or whatever you can use to make an 8x10 print (or larger). However, some challenges will be better suited to having a camera you can use to adjust shutter speed and aperture. Due to sensor size, most point-and-shoot cameras and phones cannot adequately provide shallow depth-of-field and might not be suitable for some challenges.
Participants will be required to provide their own 8x10 or larger print per class. Digital submissions will not be accepted.
PREREQUISITE: A working knowledge of your camera.
