introduction to alternative processES
Get a one-on-one introduction to three alternative photographic darkroom printing processes. Students of the Introduction to Alternative Processes class will learn the basics of these alternative processes: lith, lumen, and cyanotype printing, from expert instructors Tiina Kirik and Whitney Lewis-Smith. Through lecture, demonstration, and instructor-led experimentation, students will get a taste for the ways in which these incredible processes can be used to enhance their photographic practice. This class will also assist students in discovering which alternative process works best with their personal style.
The six-session class will include two sessions focusing on each process, with Tiina Kirik leading the sessions on Lith and Lumen Printing and Whitney Lewis-Smith leading the sessions on Cyanotype.
Lith is a silver gelatin print that has been overexposed and partially developed in highly diluted lith film developer. The prints achieve a combination of tones that are only possible using the lith printing process.
Lumen is a silver gelatin print that has been exposed by sunlight or UV light, also known as a “solar photogram.”
Cyanotype is a print that has been exposed by sunlight or UV light, then developed in ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, creating blue tones in the print.
Chemistry and a limited supply of paper and acetate material are included. Additional specialty papers, acetate material and inks may be available for purchase from SPAO.
Recommended Prerequisites (but not required): Film Photography Bootcamp, Darkroom I, or their equivalent.
