WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This hands-on workshop is an introduction to Afghan box cameras, also known as Kamra-e-faoree. This type of box camera contains paper and development chemicals, allowing photographers to take portraits in two stages. During the first stage, a negative image is produced, which is photographed in the second stage, producing the positive image.

Learn the steps to create your own box camera and produce images either in a studio setting or out on the street. Although simple to operate, the box camera touches on the building blocks of analogue photography and film development. Street photographers such as Foncie Pulice and Vivian Maier will be discussed to encourage students to find their own unique approach to producing images. Basics for using the box camera will be covered, as well as techniques such as hand-tinting, further exploring the possibilities of the medium.
